Forest School
At Leesons Primary School, we value Forest School because it allows learning to become fun and memorable. The opportunity to learn and play at Forest School throughout the year in all different types of weather is as important as learning inside. Nearly everything that is provided inside can be provided outside and some of the best learning can only happen outside.
We believe that well organised and supervised, ‘risky freedom’ helps all children to find out about themselves and their capabilities. It helps develop self-confidence, independence and lays the foundations for a healthier life. We are aware that there can be risks associated with Forest School. However, it is important that the children recognise these risks and learn to manage them. This will also allow them to develop new skills which they will rely on later in life.
At Forest School, we follow three basic rules:
-
Do not pick anything growing
-
Do not put your fingers or anything else in your mouth
-
Stay within the boundary rope, we don’t go over it we don’t go under it
In addition to this, we teach the children about The Countryside Code and ensure that this is considered:
-
Be safe, plan ahead and follow any signs
-
Leave gates and property as you find them
-
Protect plants and animals and take your litter home
-
Keep dogs under close control
-
Consider other people
